How are electricity prices SA calculated?
Several factors contribute to the final cost you pay for your electricity in South Australia:
- The Cost of Wholesale Electricity – this makes up approximately a quarter of your bill. As seen in recent years, the cost of wholesale electricity can fluctuate in response to domestic and global energy issues, such as supply disruptions (COVID and the war in Ukraine), the transition to renewables and an increase in demand based on seasonal needs.
- Default Market Offer (DMO) – in SA the electricity price is capped by the government’s DMO. This is determined by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) and is based on a combination of wholesale prices and distribution and retail costs. If the DMO rises, then the cost of your bill will also increase.
- Time of Use (ToU) Tariffs – ToU tariffs were introduced to SA electricity prices in July 2020, meaning residents can now make some huge savings by using their energy during shoulder or off-peak times when rates can be as little as half that of peak periods. In SA, there is an off-peak period from 10am to 3pm, known as the Solar Sponge, when the supply of solar energy is at its highest.
- Distribution Costs – for the majority of customers in SA, power is distributed to their homes by SA Power Networks. In some remote areas of the state, Cowell Electric Supply has been contracted by the SA government to operate the generation, distribution and retail services of electricity to the majority of remote townships and Aboriginal communities. These areas receive government subsidies to offset the increased cost of distribution and ensure safe, reliable and affordable electricity.
How does Move-In Connect Compare Electricity Suppliers Adelaide and SA?
When you talk to one of our experts, we’ll consider your unique circumstances to find you a plan that suits your needs and saves you money. Below are some of the things we’ll be looking at to find you cheap electricity SA.
Market offers
A market offer is a plan designed by your retailer that is different from the government’s electricity price, the Default Market Offer (DMO).
Market offers can include different tariffs and conditions to cater to a range of different energy needs. The rates of the market offer will be displayed as a percentage of the DMO, so you can clearly see the savings you make.
Some common tariffs for South Australian customers include solar sponge tariffs, which offer extremely low prices for off-peak consumption between 10 am and 3 pm, to encourage the use of solar power being generated during this time.
Market offers also often include additional benefits such as guaranteed fixed rates, solar feed-in tariffs and bonuses for items such as electric vehicles or Virtual Power Plants (VPPs).
Discounts and credits
With so many electricity providers SA competing to supply your energy, it’s common to find discounts and incentives of offer for both new and loyal customers. These include sign-up credits, pay-on-time discounts and bonuses for bundling multiple services with one provider.
These conditional discounts usually include a fixed-term benefit period (often 12 months). After that, you will be transferred to a more expensive standing offer, so it’s important to fully understand the terms of the offer before you sign up and compare plans every 12 months to make sure you always have the latest deal.
South Australia Electricity Concessions
To make sure all residents can access cheap electricity SA, the South Australian Government offers Energy Bill Concessions and the SA Concessions Energy Discount to low or fixed-income households, in addition to any discounts or offers from your retailer.
Eligible customers receive $263.15 per year (in 2023) to contribute to the cost of electricity, gas, LPG and petrol.
To be eligible, you must hold one of the following cards or concessions: Pensioner Concession Card, DVA Gold Card, Low Income Health Care Card, Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, JobSeeker Payment, Widow Allowance, Youth Allowance, Partner Allowance, Parenting Payment, Special Benefit, Community Development Project (CDP), New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS), ABSTUDY, Austudy, Farm Household Allowance (FHA), War widow pension under legislation of the United Kingdom or New Zealand.

Connect Utilities In The Following States
Naming the “best electricity provider Adelaide” is not as simple as it sounds. The best value and biggest savings for your home depends on a combination of rates, offers and bundles to find the plan that best suits your needs. In addition, you also need to consider non-monetary factors that are important to you, such as green initiatives and customer service to decide who the best gas and electricity provider Adelaide is.
In many parts of regional South Australia, residents can access the same great deals from the best electricity provider Adelaide. If you are connected through SA Power Networks, which distributes power from the far west coast of Eyre Peninsula, north to Leigh Creek and southeast to the Victorian border, then you have the freedom to choose your own retailer and plan to find the best electricity provider in Adelaide and SA for your home or business.
In remote townships and Aboriginal communities in South Australia, electricity is supplied by Cowell Electric Supply as part of the Remote Areas Energy Supplies (RAES) scheme. The government scheme subsidises power bills in remote areas of SA to help provide affordable electricity at a similar price to the best gas and electricity provider Adelaide.
