When you’re setting up gas or electricity at a new address, you’ll likely be asked for a few utility meter details including your MIRN, DPI, and NMI. These aren’t just random numbers, they’re how retailers and distributors link the right services to your home. Here’s a breakdown of what they mean and how Move-in Connect helps.
What’s a MIRN?
MIRN stands for Meter Installation Reference Number. It’s an 11-digit number used to identify your gas connection in Victoria, Queensland, and South Australia.
It’s different from your gas meter number which refers to the physical hardware. The MIRN connects your address to the gas supply at a network level.
You’ll usually find your MIRN on the second page of your gas bill. It typically starts with the number 5 and looks something like: 50123456789.
If you don’t have a bill handy, you can also find the MIRN printed directly on the gas meter itself.
What’s a DPI?
Do you live in New South Wales? Your gas service is identified by a DPI (Delivery Point Identifier) instead of a MIRN.
This is a 10-digit number, also starting with 5, that works the same way as a MIRN. You’ll find it on your gas bill or on the meter.
Whether you’re in VIC, QLD, SA or NSW, your gas metre number won’t help with setting up your account. What you need is the MIRN or DPI to get the gas connected at your property.
What’s an NMI?
The NMI is short for National Meter Identifier and it’s used for electricity. This number is unique to your property and links your electricity supply to the network.
Most NMI numbers are 10 or 11 digits long and printed on both your electricity meter and your power bill.
Don’t have a bill and wondering how to find NMI number without bill? Head to the meter at your property. The NMI is often printed on the front or side, near the display or keypad.
Why These Numbers Matter
These numbers aren’t optional, they’re what your energy provider uses to:
- Connect your gas or electricity to the right supply point
- Confirm your property’s energy setup
- Avoid billing issues linked to the wrong meter
- Speed up the switching or connection process
Each time you move, switch plans, or update your energy services, these IDs come into play.

What If You Can’t Find Your MIRN, DPI or NMI?
Don’t worry, you’re not stuck. If you can’t locate these numbers:
- Ask your real estate agent or landlord (they often have past bills)
- Contact your current or previous energy provider
- Reach out to Move-in Connect, we can use your property address to locate the right numbers for you and get your connection sorted fast
Here’s a quick overview:
| What’s the Code | For What | How Long Is It | Starts With | Why It Matters |
| MIRN | Gas (VIC, QLD, SA) | 11 digits | 5 | Links you to your gas pipe & bill |
| DPI | Gas (NSW) | 10 digits | 5 | Same job as MIRN, for NSW properties |
| NMI | Electricity | 10–11 digits | Varies | Connects your meter to the grid & bill |
Do You Need the Meter Number Too?
Yes, sometimes. Your meter number is the serial code printed on the actual gas or electricity meter. It helps technicians identify the specific hardware at your property but isn’t used for billing or switching by itself.
When you contact Move-in Connect, we may ask for both your meter number and your MIRN/DPI or NMI to make sure the right meter gets linked to your service. This avoids delays or errors during setup or transfer.
