What Is the NBN?
The National Broadband Network (NBN) is Australia’s high-speed internet infrastructure. It replaces older ADSL and ADSL2+ connections with fibre optics to provide faster and more reliable internet.
How Do I Connect to the NBN?
To connect to the NBN, check your address on an internet provider’s website to see what type of NBN is available. Choose a plan, sign up with a provider like Telstra, Optus, TPG, Dodo, or Tangerine, and they will arrange the setup. Some connections require a technician, while others only need an NBN-ready modem.
How do I get NBN connected at a new house?
If the property is already connected to the NBN, you can set up your service before moving in. If not, NBN Co will arrange an installation and activate your connection.

Do I have to pay the new development fee?
The New Development Fee (NDF) is a $300 fee charged by NBN Co to connect NBN to new houses, including at a premise identified as being within the site boundary of a new development and premises in an established area where a developer has increased the number of dwellings on the same plot of land.
Your telecom provider will pass on this fee to you in your initial set-up fees.
If you are moving into a home with an existing service, then you will not be charged the NDF or any connection costs.

Can I choose the type of technology for the new NBN connection at my home?

You can use the address checker to see which type is available in your area. In major towns and cities, expect to transition your existing NBN powered plan to a new plan based on NBN fibre to the curb FTTC or NBN fibre to the building FTTB. In regional suburban and regional towns expect to transition your existing NBN powered plan to a new plan based on NBN fibre to the node FTTN.
Where should I place my NBN box?
When moving NBN boxes, the location will impact the strength of your signal, so you should take care to choose an appropriate location.
The recommended position is centrally located, between one and one and a half metres off the ground and in a well-ventilated, easily accessible place where it will be protected from knocks.
If you are in a large home or a two-storey house, you might need a Wi-Fi extender to get a good signal in areas furthest from the box.
What is the process for moving NBN boxes?
If you are renovating or trying to improve your signal, then moving NBN boxes is possible, but should be done with care. You will need to contact your internet provider who can arrange for a technician to come to your home.
If the request is not related to a fault in the service, there may be a fee payable for moving NBN boxes.
Because there is time and money involved in moving NBN boxes, it’s important to carefully consider where you want to move them too. The outdoor utility box needs to have easy access and be safe from damage, while the indoor connection box should be in a central location to provide a strong signal throughout your house.

Can I self-install to connect NBN to a new house?
No. You will need a technician to complete the installation if you are setting up an NBN new connections. If you are just switching providers, then you will be able to set up your modem yourself. You can call your internet provider to configure your old modem.
Can I reschedule an installation appointment?
For most retailers, you will be able to reschedule your appointment with 3 working days’ notice. If you need to reschedule within 3 days, you could be charged a fee.
Do I need to order new NBN boxes to connect NBN to a new house?
If your new house NBN connection is a brand new service to a property that has never been connected before, then you will need to order new NBN boxes as part of the installation process.

Is there a fee to order new NBN boxes or for moving NBN boxes?
If you are getting a brand new service, you will need to order new NBN boxes (connection and utility), which have to be installed by a qualified technician. There is no cost for this service as long as your new property is NBN-ready. If you are moving to a new development that is not NBN-ready, you might have to pay a $300 New Development Fee (see above).
How fast will my new NBN connection be?
On average, with an a new house NBN connection, you will be able to access typical evening speeds of 50Mbs. However, the speed you can access depends on several factors, including the technology type available to connect NBN to new house, the strength of your WiFi signal, congestion in the network and the plan you have chosen.

If you experience consistently slower speeds, you should contact your internet service provider to report a fault with the NBN connection new house.
How do I run a broadband speed test?
You can check your internet speed quickly and easily through a number of broadband speed test websites to check that your speed matches the speed tiers you signed up for.

How many devices can I use at the same time?
You can use unlimited devices via a WiFi modem. If you need to use an ethernet cable, there is one active data port available.
Depending on the speed tier and your NBN new connections technology type, you may notice your speed slow down as more devices join the network.
If you experience slow speeds when using multiple devices, your modem may not be capable of dealing with the high load, or some devices may be too far away from the modem to receive a good signal.
How much will a plan cost?
There is a range of plans available, depending on the area you live in and the provider you choose. Talk to one of our experts to find a plan or bundle that is just right for your home.
As a guide, to connect NBN to new house, your plan will be between $50 – $100, depending on the speed you choose. There may be a set-up fee of around $100 if you choose a no-lock-in contract. If you choose a 6 to 12-month contract, there are usually no set-up fees.

Can I change plans after I sign up?
If you want to upgrade your plan, you can usually do this at any time. Simply give us a call and we can help you find the best broadband plan for you.
If you want to change providers or downgrade, you will need to look at the terms of your current plan. There might be exit fees payable if you are on a fixed-term contract.
Can I still run my medical and security alarm, EFTPOS, and fax machine?
We advise checking with your service provider to see if these items will work. Many of these devices that are normally powered through phone lines can be run through the NBN.
Can I use my existing internet provider when I move homes?
Moving broadband can be as simple as a call to your provider. In case your existing provider is unable to help, simply give us a call to find a new internet plan.

What NBN Speeds Are Available?
NBN plans come in different speed tiers:

Fibre-to-the-Node (FTTN), Fibre-to-the-Curb (FTTC), and Fixed Wireless can be slower due to reliance on older infrastructure. Satellite NBN is designed for rural and remote areas.
How Much Does the NBN Cost?
The cost depends on the provider and speed tier. Plans typically start at around $50 per month for basic speeds and go up to $130 or more for premium high-speed plans.
Is the NBN Better Than ADSL?
Yes. NBN offers faster speeds, lower latency, and better reliability than ADSL and ADSL2+, which use outdated copper wiring.
Do I Need a New Modem for the NBN?
It depends on your connection type. Some NBN plans require an NBN-compatible modem, while others use an NBN-supplied device. Many providers include a modem with their plans.
What Happens If My NBN Is Slow?

Can an NBN box be moved to another house?
No, the NBN box stays where it was originally installed. It is registered to that address and will not work anywhere else. NBN Co owns the equipment, so it cannot be removed, sold, or used at a different location. However, you should take your router, modem, and cables with you when moving.
How much does it cost to install NBN in a new house?
For most homes, installation is free. However, if the property has never had an internet connection before, a $300 New Development Charge applies.
How long does it take to relocate my NBN service?
If your new home already has an NBN connection, your service can be transferred within 1 to 3 business days. If a technician is required to complete the setup, the process may take longer.
