Why brokers are early

You see the move before almost anyone else

You hear about the move before most of the chain does. This page covers what it earns, the admin it adds (one sentence) and how it sits with your AFS licence.

Commission

What your book would have earned

You earn an agreed commission on each utility service that connects for a client you refer, paid monthly and itemised per client.

A utility connection referral for insurance brokers is paid on connections that complete, not on names passed across. If a client declines or never connects, nothing is owed in either direction.

Your client is never charged. They sign up with the retailer they choose, at that retailer's advertised rates, and the retailer remains bound by the consumer protections overseen by the Australian Energy Regulator (checked September 2026). The retailer funds the commission.

Services we offer your clients

Where it fits

Owner-occupier and landlord policies

Referring at the policy change takes a job off your client in the busiest week of their move, and that goodwill matters as much as the commission.

Home insurance and utility connection come up in the same conversation, but for two different people: on a home policy your client is moving, behind a landlord policy it is the incoming tenant.

Home policies

The client is the one moving

When you write cover for a home the client has not yet moved into, that client will still need to have electricity and gas for the new address booked before settlement, and most clients have not started on it by the time they speak to you about cover.

One sentence in the policy call hands that job to a specialist who compares the panel and books every service. It takes one item off the long list of what a client organises when moving, and it arrives while there is still time to choose properly rather than scramble in the final days before the move.

  1. You mention it
  2. We call the client
  3. You earn monthly

Landlord policies

The incoming tenant is moving

Once the details come through, we contact the incoming tenant directly, compare the panel for that address and then arrange a tenant's electricity connection for the lease start date, so neither your client nor their property manager spends the first week of the tenancy chasing it.

Tenants are free to decline and arrange their own connection, and plenty do. For those who want to understand the steps first, there is a plain guide to how a tenant connects utilities in a rental, covering timing, cut-offs, meter access and what to have ready before they speak to anyone about it.

  2. We call the tenant
  3. You earn monthly
Partner types

The same model across partner types

Mortgage brokers

Finance brokers use exactly the same independent arrangement in the quiet weeks between approval and settlement, and you can see how this works for mortgage brokers, which matters when a client is buying and insuring the same property in the same few weeks before moving day.

Accountants

Accounting practices refer clients moving home or premises, with business energy compared through specialist retailers, so it helps to know how this works for accountants when a joint client should hear the same independent story from both advisers, whichever of you happens to raise the move with them first.

Property managers

Landlord clients usually have an agency arranging the tenancy as well, so before you refer a tenant it is worth checking how this works for property managers, so the incoming tenant gets one clear call about their connections rather than two competing calls in the same week.

What changes

Better for you. Better for your client.

Referring adds a separate commission line for your brokerage and saves your client a round of calls, without changing how you advise on cover.

For your brokerage

An adjacent commission line

This is insurance broker additional revenue that sits outside your insurance remuneration, reported and paid on its own statement. Nothing about the policy, the premium or your advice changes.

  • No extra outreach, the conversation already happens
  • Monthly statement, split by broker or branch
  • Itemised separately from insurance remuneration
For your client

Consistent with what you already do

Clients hire you to compare a market on their behalf, and utility connections for insurance clients should meet the same standard. One call explains how the connection works, compares the panel for their address and books each service they choose, with nothing charged to them at any point.

  • 20+ retailers compared
  • One call, everything booked
  • Health insurance compared too, if wanted

The commission basis is the same whichever partner type you are: an agreed share per connected service, paid monthly and itemised per client. For the wider picture, including handing over your whole book rather than referring one client at a time, read about the full partner program and the two models it offers, before deciding which one suits the way your brokerage and your team already work day to day.

After you refer

What happens after you refer a client

You pass on the client's name and new address. We handle the call, the comparison and the booking, and you see the result on your statement.

What you do

Mention the service during the policy call and send the client's details through the partner dashboard or by email.

What we do

Call the client, compare the panel for the new address, book each service they choose and arrange disconnection at the old address.

How a referral runs from policy call to move-in day

A specialist contacts the client within [X business hours] of the referral. The call confirms the move date, the services needed at the new address and any meter or access details. The specialist then compares the panel of more than 20 retailers and providers and books each service the client chooses for the move-in date.

The client deals with one person from first call to connection. If the move date changes, the client or the broker tells us once and every booking is moved together. Each referral appears in the partner dashboard with its status, so the broker can answer a client's question without chasing anyone. A client who declines is marked as closed and is not contacted again.

Questions

What insurance brokers ask us

Short answers to the questions brokers raise before they sign.

Still have a question?Talk to the partner team, Monday to Friday, 9am to 8pm AEST.1300 362 580

Can insurance brokers earn referral commission?

Yes, subject to your AFS licence obligations and your licensee's policy on referral arrangements. Confirm the position with your compliance team first.

What can insurance brokers offer clients who are moving?

An independent utility connection service. The client is already updating their address on the policy, so the conversation is a natural extension.

Does this apply to landlord policies?

Yes. A landlord policy address change usually signals a tenancy change, which means a tenant connection rather than an owner-occupier one.

Is this a financial product?

No. Utility connection is not a financial service, but how the referral sits alongside your licensed activity is worth confirming with your licensee.

When is the best time to raise it?

At the point the new address is added to the policy. That is usually earlier than most other partners in the chain see the move.
