Compare energy plans from Energy Locals
How does Move-In Connect compare electricity providers NSW?
New South Wales is a deregulated energy market, which means residents can choose the cheapest electricity NSW for their home’s power needs. However, there are over 20 retailers offering various discounted rates and special offers, so finding the cheapest option can be a bit trickier than it sounds.
You can read all about how to compare plans and get connected here: Connect and Compare New Electricity and Gas.
Instead of spending days trying to figure it out yourself, let one of our experts do the hard work for you. In one easy phone call, we will find out about your home’s unique energy needs and then match you to a plan that will save you money.
To find your perfect plan we will ask about:
- Your location
- Household size
- How many people live in your home
- Type of appliances you use
- If you use gas
- If you have solar panels and battery
- Any special energy needs such as a swimming pool or electric vehicle
Once we know all about how you use energy in your home, we can thoroughly compare the plans available from our panel of preferred suppliers. We will look at the rates on offer, tariffs, special offers, green options and fees. Each of these is discussed below.
Electricity Rates NSW
The first thing to look at is the NSW electricity prices per kWh. Energy retailers are required to advertise their rates as a percentage discount from the Default Market Offer (DMO). The DMO is the reference price set by the government to ensure affordable power for everyone. Finding a retailer with a low rate per kWh is a great first step to finding a cheap energy plan, but it’s not the only thing you need to consider.Electricity Rates NSW
The tariff in your chosen plan will determine the rate you pay for energy at different times of the day, or for different appliances. Choosing the right tariff to match your energy usage habits can make a huge difference to your total bill. There are two parts to your tariff.Tariffs

Supply charge
This is a fixed daily charge from the distributor for the cost of supplying energy to your home. There are three distributors in NSW – Ausgrid, Endeavour and Essential Energy. They will pass on their charge to your retailer, who will in turn pass it on to you.
Usage charge
This is a variable charge based on how much energy you use. It is charged as cents per kilowatt-hour (c/kWh), based on the rate you are eligible for in your plan.
Some tariffs give you access to different rates for different times of day or appliances. The trick to finding the best electricity plans NSW is finding a tariff suitable for your home’s needs. The most common tariffs include:
- Time-of-use tariff (ToU) tariff – cheaper rates for off-peak and shoulder hours
- Fixed rate tariff – same rate at all times of the day and night
- Controlled load tariff – discounted rates for specific separately metered appliances
- Solar feed-in tariffs – the rate paid to you for excess power from your solar panels

Rebates and concessions

Some of the energy rebates and concessions in NSW include:
- Family Energy Rebate
- Seniors Energy Rebate
- Low Income Household Rebate

What are the charges on my energy bill?
You will notice several charges on your bill that combine to make up the amount you pay each quarter. It can be helpful to understand each charge to compare power prices NSW with confidence.
- Supply charge: The cost for your retailer to supply energy to your home, including the distributor cost from Ergon Energy, metering charges and a portion of the retailer’s fixed operating costs.
- Demand charge: An additional fee for power used when unusually high demand occurs, such as during the hot summer months.
- Distributor charge: An additional charge for actions outside the regular supply of energy to your home, such as same-day connections or emergency works.
- Consumption charge: The cost of the energy consumed by your household or small business, based on your daily energy usage and the tariff and special offer or discounts you have signed up for.
