Same-Day Connections For Moving House Electricity And Gas In A Rush!

 What is a same-day connection?

A same-day, or urgent, connection occurs when a property needs power switching on immediately. For standard connections, the distributor requires three to five business days’ notice, but there are a variety of situations that can arise that cause the notice period to be missed and an urgent moving utilities service is required.

Sometimes, it can be as simple as forgetting to give notice to your new provider when you are moving home electricity. It is your retailer’s responsibility to notify the distributor that you are moving an electricity connection, so in rarer circumstances, it may be the fault of the retailer if they have not communicated with the distributor. 

Urgent connections can also be required if there has been physical work required before the power supply is complete, such as new poles and lines, that have run over schedule.

The best way you can avoid fees is to plan ahead and make sure you choose your new electricity provider more than five business days before your move (remember to count public holidays and weekends). By letting your retailer know in time, they can book a standard connection with the distributor.

Who do I call to arrange a same-day new electricity connection?

Although it is your distributor that will need to perform the work, your point of contact is your retailer, who will liaise with the distributor to connect electricity and gas to your property.

Even though it is the distributor that charges for an urgent connection, you will have to pay your retailer, who will pass on the charge. Each retailer charges a different amount for same-day connections for moving your house’s electricity.

The cost of an urgent connection depends on where you live, your retailer and if it is out of hours, a weekend or a public holiday. The fee can be up to $400.

Special connections

Some new property electricity and gas connections may require additional work, which means they cannot be connected on the same day. If this applies to you, you need to make sure that you give your retailer sufficient notice or you will have no choice but to move in with no power.

Special connections include homes that need new power poles or powerlines for electricity to reach the property, or a new meter installed.

There may be charges for these services so you should check with your retailer before work begins to avoid any unpleasant surprises. The cost of these works is set by the distributor, so prices will vary depending on where you live.
