This page will teach you how to compare NBN plans with ease to find the perfect plan for your internet needs.

Connection types – which is right for you

There’s no point in starting your NBN plan comparison before you know (and understand) what’s available for your home. You need to consider the upload and download speeds you need, how many people need to connect at once, and the type of internet activities you want to carry out to help you decide which type of connection is best for you. Of course, you also need to have a realistic budget in mind before you start.

The big question for high-speed home internet is 5G vs NBN. Both are considered fast and reliable, with comparable costs, so the decision might come down to what’s available in your area. You can read a more thorough comparison here: 5G vs NBN – which one is right for me?

There are also other connection types available that offer lower speeds but are much more budget-friendly. One of our experts can help you figure out which of the following connection types will suit your home:

  • NBN
  • 5G Network
  • 4G Network
  • ADSL
  • ADSL2+

Internet speed and bandwidth If you only consider two things when looking for the best NBN plans, it should be speed and cost.

Starting with speed, you need to think about the following:

  • What your household uses the internet for (HD content streaming, social media, working from home, online gaming etc)
  • How many people will use your connection at once

Internet speed refers to the volume of data that can be transferred per second, measured in megabytes per second (Mbps).

ADSL+ and the lowest NBN tiers deliver speeds of between 3Mbps and 12 Mbps, this is perfect for single-person homes and for activities such as surfing the web or making calls.

At the other end of the scale, top-tier NBN plans and 5G connections deliver speeds of 50Mbps to 225Mbps, which you might need for working from home, watching 4K shows and movies or competing in online gaming.

As you would expect, the faster speeds are more expensive, so make sure you realistically consider how fast you need your connection to be so you don’t end up paying top dollar for speeds you won’t use.

You can read more about choosing the right internet speed here: Choose the right internet speed when you connect broadband.

If you are struggling with your current internet speed and feel it isn’t performing as it should, learn how to run a speed test here: Test your broadband speed.

The cost of your internet plan For many people, price is the single determining factor when moving broadband. A lot of internet plans are a 12 to 24-month commitment, so it’s really important to make sure the contract you choose fits within your long-term budget.

Prices can vary significantly between providers, so it definitely pays to shop around.

The reliability of your connection Although your internet reliability is a crucial factor to consider when you compare NBN plans it can be hard to determine if one ISP will deliver above another.

One option is to read customer reviews on the provider you are considering to see if existing customers in your area have encountered any problems. You can also ask the provider if your plan includes a Service Level Agreement (SLA), which guarantees a certain level of performance.

If you have an existing NBN plan with reliability issues, there are steps you can take to try to optimise the performance. You can read all about it here: Steps to optimise your new NBN connection.

If you are still encountering patchy internet, you can consider switching to a different type, which might be better for your area. Read our guide to 5G vs NBN to decide which is best for you.

Bundles and extras There can be big savings to be made by finding a provider with attractive extras or discounts for bundling services. Some providers include a modem in their plans, which can save an upfront cost of hundreds of dollars, while others offer ongoing discounts on your bill for bundling your internet plan with other phone or energy services.

Things to look out for include:

  • Free modem
  • Discounts for BYO modem
  • Free Installation
  • Pay TV Australia bundle
  • Energy bundle
  • Mobile and home phone bundle
  • No-lock in contracts
Customer service While customer service won’t affect your budget, it can help you avoid connection delays and help you get back up and running faster if you experience an outage.

You can look on an ISP’s website to see if they have won awards for customer service or read reviews from existing customers.

Coverage and availability While ADSL and ADSL+ are widely available, NBN and 5G are only available in certain areas as the roll-out continues. More and more areas are being covered every day, so it’s worth checking in regularly to find out when it will be available in your area.
